The ARRIBA Program

I will be here in Lima, Peru until April 2008. I am living with a Peruvian Family and Cole - my room mate from Faith Baptist Bible College. The first few months we went through language school as well as different cultural, Bible, and missions classes. Now I am serving in a local church in a suburb of Lima called Manchay. The mission is the great Commission--bringing souls into the universal church of Christ and discipling them in the local church here in Manchay.

My Pisco Trip – A Wicked Place in Desperate Need of a Holy God

Wednesday and Thursday I was able to go on my survey trip to Pisco. Although I only had a few days there, the Lord accomplished very much. We were able to get in contact with the one Baptist pastor in all of Pisco. His church has only been there five months, but is growing. The national church planting pastor met us in a market, and gave us a very extensive survey of the city, the different classes, groups, sections, etc. We were also able to assist his church Wednesday night where we had the privilege to preach. It was a blessing to preach to this baby church on the grace of God—what it is, what it does and what it teaches us to be.

The Lord also blessed us with the opportunity to find another pastor in town. He isn’t Baptist in name, but most of his beliefs would be the same as ours, although there are a few areas that I would definitely have to disagree on. It was a blessing to talk to him about the needs and then pray with him.

The Lord broke my heart as I saw the rather extensive need here in Pisco and the surrounding towns— roughly 115,000 people, and only 2 churches that preach the gospel. There are 4 or 5 towns that almost connect to Pisco that have no churches either. The town of Pisco is very catholic, but also very idolatrous. The Catholic Church has permitted the people to mix their ancient beliefs and superstitions with the Catholic Church. As we walked through the streets I could feel and see the sin and darkness—the drunkards and drug-addicts, the immorality, the absence of the gospel, etc. The Lord wants His name to be called upon and glorified in this city and the surrounding towns.

Please pray for me as I further prepare for the mission field. I know my calling—to preach the Word that will correct the problems and sins, and to train and disciple leaders that can win and disciple leaders (Titus 1:5). It could just be that Pisco is my “Crete.” This is a wicked place in desperate need of a Holy God.

Remember to pray for safety and opportunities in the jungle April 1-11.

Titus 1:5 – For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you--

Will be praying for you. Miss you much! Keep serving God and allowing Him to give you a greater burden for the people of this sinful world!
